Hale
Apapane, a secluded island-style cottage, nestles in the rain forest
of Mauna Loa Estates, just two miles from Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park and 35 miles from downtown
Hilo. In the early morning, native honeycreepers feed on the red
ohia blossoms that crown this quiet property. Anthuriums and orchids
hide underneath tree ferns that may reach 8-foot lengths.
The separate upstairs and downstairs accommodations
are equipped with everything you might expect—linens and
towels, fully-equipped kitchen facilities, TVs with VCR and cable,
CD players, and hairdryers. Each unit also comes with a propane
fireplace, and coffees, teas, and breakfast fixings for the first
day.
Freshly baked fine pastries, provided
by host Karen Galan, welcome new guests. Galan is a recognized
pastry chef in the islands with over twenty years of experience.
She specializes in gift-wrapped baked
goods and
special-occasion
cakes. Please
contact Karen if
your vacation coincides with a celebration or if you are looking
for island gifts.
Hale Apapane
is minutes away from hiking trails, the current lava flow
(if Kilauea is erupting), and bird watching adventures. Even
the misty greens of a volcano golf course and a winery with tasting
room are nearby. Volcano Village, half a mile away, is home
to several restaurants, stores, and galleries. On Sunday
morning, the farmers market sets up shop in the village—a great place for good food,
tropical flowers, and local flavors to take home.
